Exclusive Interview With Puya - The Romanian Hip-Hop Artist

      Hello dear readers and welcome again to one of our famous 10-question interview series - the first male artist to be interviewed by Xenon Magazine. Today we have as a special guest, Mr. Puya (real name - Dragoș Gardescu), a Romanian Hip-Hop artist. He became famous as member of the La Familia, the Hip-Hop music band, established in 1994. The band enjoyed early success and they kept bringing to the public lots of music hits, most of them describing real aspects of the life in the districts where they live. We managed to get in touch with Puya, as he published two great videos, promoting two recent albums: "Românisme I" and "Românisme II". His lyrics hint at bringing a good change in the mentality of the people and also criticizing the flaws of the society. This interview is featured both in Romanian and English.

Xenon Magazine: Am auzit că după unele reviste eşti considerat omul anului. Ce zici de această nominalizare? (English: We heard that some magazines think of you as the man of the year. What do you have to say about that?)

      Puya: Ce să spun... normal că mă bucură nominalizarea asta... oricum, nominalizarea se referă la muzică doar. (English: What can I say… of course this nomination makes me happy…, anyway it refers only to the musical side.)

      Xenon Magazine: Ce anume crezi că garantează succesul în industria muzicală românească? (English: What is the key to the success in the Romanian Music Industry in your opinion?)

      Puya: Nu exista o reţetă anume. Azi eşti în top, mâine poţi să fii jos la fel de repede. Ce contează e să rămâi mereu entuziasmat de ceea ce faci şi să păstrezi realismul. În momentul în care banii sunt singurul tău interes atunci cu siguranţă nu reuşeşti. (English: There isn’t a certain one. You’re on top today and you can be down tomorrow just as easy. What matters is to keep your enthusiasm about what you do and keeping it real. If money is your only interest, then failure is certain.)

      Xenon Magazine: În legătură cu melodia „Change”: în ce măsură crezi că versurile îi vor influenţa pe fanii tăi? Se va schimba ceva în Romania? (English: Regarding the “Change” song, how much will the lyrics influence your fans? Will this bring a change in Romania?)

      Puya: În ce măsura îi va influenţa pe fani nu îți pot spune pentru că nu lucrez la un centru de statistică. Eu sunt bucuros că mesajul meu a ajuns la radio de unde poate fi ascultat de cât mai multă lume. Schimbarea se face treptat şi sper că cei care au ascultat melodia să stea un pic pe gânduri măcar. (English: I can’t tell you exactly how the lyrics will influence the fans because I don’t work in a statistics center. I’m glad that my message reached the radio stations, where lots of people can listen to it. The change is done in small steps and I hope that the people who have listened to the song will take a few moments to think about it.)

      Xenon Magazine: La ce album lucrezi acum? Vom mai vedea colaborări cu Kamelia? (English: What album are you working on now? Will we see more featurings with Kamelia?)

      Puya: Lucrez, lucrez, lucrez. Pe ce album voi pune piesele nu ştiu, dar mie îmi place să mă duc la studio şi când nu trebuie să scot albume. Probabil voi mai colabora cu Kamelia dacă se va ivi ocazia. (English: I’m working, working, working. I don’t know yet on what album I’ll include the tracks, but I like going to the studio even when I don’t have to work on albums. I will work again with Kamelia if there’s an opportunity.)

      Xenon Magazine: Despre videoclipul „Undeva în Balcani” – este adevărat că una fetele din videoclip a fost selectată pentru că seamănă cu Monica Columbeanu? (English: About the “Undeva în Balcani” - Somewhere in the Balcans - video – is it true that one of the girls was selected because she looks like Monica Columbeanu?)

      Puya: Nu este adevărat! Dacă ne doream să o avem pe Monica în clip puteam să îi propunem direct ei... (English: Not true at all! If we wanted to have Monica in the video, we could have just asked her…)

Puya (La Familia) - Undeva în Balcani

     

Xenon Magazine: Ce înseamnă să fii gentleman? (English: What does it mean to be a gentleman?)

      Puya: Pentru mine să fii un gentleman e să ştii să te comporţi cu cei de lângă tine. Să ştii să vorbeşti frumos unui copil, dar şi tăios unui duşman. Să poţi purta o discuţie indiferent dacă cel cu care discuţi are 8 clase sau 2 facultăţi. (English: To me being a gentleman means knowing how to behave with the people around you, knowing how to speak kindly to a child but also sharply to an enemy. You should know how to have a conversation with people, no matter their level of education.)

      Xenon Magazine: Ştim că a fost un conflict între formaţia ta de muzică şi altele rivale. S-a rezolvat între timp? (English: We know there was a conflict between your music band and a few rival ones? Have the problems been solved in the mean time?)

      Puya: Pentru mine s-a rezolvat… Pentru ei nu ştiu. (English: We’re OK (my band) now, I don’t know about the other bands.)

      Xenon Magazine: Care sunt cântăreţii tăi preferaţi? Ce influenţe are muzica ta? (English: Who are your favorite singers? What influences does your music have?)

      Puya: Încă de mic mi-a plăcut 2 Pac (Tupac Shakur) pe care îl consider o personalitate la fel de puternică ca Elvis sau Bob Marley. În maşina ascult tot felul de muzică. Nu ascult însă operă şi jazz. (English: Ever since I was very young I liked 2 Pac (Tupac Shakur), whom I consider a personality just as strong as Elvis or Bob Marley. In my car I listen to all kinds of music. I don’t listen to opera or jazz.)

     

Xenon Magazine: Ai realiza o emisiune TV dacă ţi s-ar oferi ocazia? Cu ce tematică? (English: Would you host a TV Show if given the opportunity? What would be the main topic?)

      Puya: Nu cred că aş avea timp de aşa ceva, dar cine ştie… Îmi place PIMP MY RIDE. Poate dacă aş avea ocazia să vad atâtea hârburi recondiţionate mi-ar trezi interesul. (English: I doubt that I’d have time for that, but who knows… I like PIMP MY RIDE. Maybe if I had the chance to see so many old but reconditioned cars, it might raise my interest.)

      Xenon Magazine: Ce părere ai despre pirateria care afectează artiştii din domeniul muzicii? Cum te afectează pe tine acest lucru? (English: What do you think about the piracy that affects the music artists? What are its effects on you?)

      Puya: Mai nou, nu pirateria afecteaza muzica ci chiar publicul care descarcă de pe net, iar asta nu e neaparat piraterie. Lumea trebuie să înţeleagă că atunci când descarcă albumul unui artist de pe net nu face decât să-i scurteze cariera. Publicul o să se trezească ascultând toate „fetiţele” sponsorizate şi nu o să ştie de ce aceia care îi plăceau nu mai scot nimic… (English: Recently, it’s not the piracy that affects the music, but the very public, the people who download from the Internet. The public must understand that when they download the album of an artist from the Internet, they only cut short the artist’s career. The people will end up listening to all the sponsored “girls” and they will not realize why the singers they loved are no longer making music.)
